When new security requirements for ordering ID06 cards take effect, they will not apply to students participating in internships. In other words, students will not be required to verify their identity with a passport or national ID card in order to obtain the elevID06 required to participate in internships in the construction industry.
On January 28, 2026, new security requirements will be introduced for ordering ID06 cards. Cardholders must then be able to verify their identity with a passport or national ID card. The stricter rule provides even stronger protection against workplace crime. However, one group is exempt from the new rule—students doing internships in the construction industry, who will use a special elevID06 during their internship period.
“There are young people who can’t afford a passport or national ID card, and we want to minimize the barriers to internships. Internships are important for inspiring young people to choose careers in the construction industry,” says Emma Svärd, program manager at elevID06.
Teachers and representatives of the construction industry have highlighted the financial barrier, and ID06 has taken their feedback into account and subsequently adjusted the regulations for students participating in internships.
Another argument in favor of the change is that some minor students may also have difficulty obtaining a guardian’s signature, and it has been important to remove this obstacle as well.
“Regulations should help, not hinder. Internships are one of the most important pathways into the construction industry, so the regulations must facilitate—not hinder,” says Emma.
The new exemption applies only to students in work-study programs where the school orders cards through elevID06 . For summer jobs and other employment, however, students need a standard ID06 card and must present a passport or national ID card when applying for one. When ordering cards, students use BankID and Freja eID+, which verify their identity and ensure security without imposing additional costs on them.
The new regulations ensure that oversight in the construction industry remains robust, while also giving young people the opportunity to complete their internships without unnecessary financial barriers.
